Through an anonymous, 18-question survey we evaluated barriers dental professionals face in identifying smokers within their patient population and the role faculty can feasibly play in providing cessation and referrals for lung cancer screening (LCS). Sixty-five clinical faculty participated. While 85% assessed tobacco use, 56% did not feel prepared to deliver cessation to patients. Sixty percent indicated that dental professionals should be involved in promoting LCS to patients. Our results suggest that the academic community is ready to embrace innovative approaches and prepare students to practice in integrated models of care that incorporate approaches for health promotion and disease prevention.

Describe innovative strategies to improve the teaching and learning of health promotion strategies for dental and dental hygiene students to ultimately improve patients' oral and general health.
Examine educational and clinical barriers to integrate new perspectives and approaches into the existing dental curriculum.
Identify current ways to inspire, empower and motivate dental professionals to leverage the potential of collaborations and technology to prepare our students to practice in collaborative care.
