This session focusses on understanding the impact of marijuana on oral health with optimum care for best patient outcomes in dental practice. Strategies to empower the dental health care provider to improve knowledge and understanding of medical and recreational marijuana use by dental patients will be discussed. The short talks will review background information and highlight educational strategies and treatment philosophies from different institutions concerning marijuana use. Relevant information from peer reviewed evidence based literature will be presented. In addition to providing awareness, this interactive session will use audience participation to implementation of educational strategies in dental school curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess the impact of marijuana in oral health and how to provide optimum care for dental patients.
  • Examine implementation of screening and learning tools in the curriculum for interviewing patient for cannabis use.
  • Identify barriers encountered while incorporating strategies in the dental curriculum.
