Programmatic assessment, a comprehensive approach to evaluating learners, was introduced to medical schools since the 2010s following Cees van der Veluten’s seminal work. Adopting a programmatic approach opens opportunities to facilitate learning integration, as well as to track student progress longitudinally, however it is still considered an unconventional approach in dental education. Participants will learn about the principles of programmatic assessment in the context of the unique needs of dental education, as well as hear from colleagues’ experience of using programmatic assessment so that they may evaluate their readiness for adopting such an approach to holistic assessment.

Learning Objectives:

Critically examine how assessments facilitate learning integration.
Explain how the principles of programmatic assessment can be applied in a dental education context.
Identify ways the concept that ‘assessment IS the curriculum’ can drive assessment to facilitate learning integration.
