Oral mucosal lesions can exhibit different clinical presentations in people of color (POC), yet these differences are infrequently discussed or highlighted in oral health education. When providers are unaware of variations in the clinical appearance of pathologic conditions in POC, delays in diagnosis or misdiagnosis can occur, with potentially serious consequences. This session will highlight, and increase awareness of, differences in the clinical presentation of various intraoral lesions presenting in POC and will empower accurate diagnosis and treatment. Bias in the scientific literature and racial and ethnic health disparities that exist in pathology diagnosis and management will also be discussed.
