The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) modified Standard 2-25 in 2019 to improve health care accessibility and equity, requiring dental school graduates to be competent in the management of patients with special needs. The Texas Tech Hunt School of Dental Medicine has integrated special needs care into its predoctoral dental program’s training. The goal is to implement a comprehensive curriculum that equips students with the skills, knowledge and compassion needed to deliver efficient dental care to these patients. The presentation will discuss the opportunities, challenges and impact on the school's curriculum and students' learning experience/outcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the implementation of an integrative curriculum for teaching special dental care patient management that can effectively address challenges and maximize opportunities in the education of dental students.
  • Appraise how an integrative curriculum fosters innovation in teaching methods, incorporating simulation labs, role-playing and real-world practicum experiences.
  • Evaluate how a dental curriculum can provide comprehensive education while maintaining manageable workloads for students and faculty.
