Millions of dental patients have Ozempic and Wegovy prescriptions for treatment of diabetes, obesity and eating disorders—conditions students often avoid addressing. In this session, you will learn the oral health effects and side effects of GLP-1 agonists that students and their patients should know. You will gain an understanding of patients’ reluctance to disclose their prescription or to obscure the reason for it. You will generate strategies for creating shame-free environments conducive to patient disclosure and will brainstorm ways to train students in cultivating the patient trust necessary for open discussion of GLP-1 agonists' benefits and risks.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain in simple terms the relevance of semaglutide use to oral health and dentistry.
  • Identify specific reasons patients and dental students may be reluctant to disclose or discuss semaglutide use.
  • Apply appropriate instructional strategies to cultivate student willingness and competence to address their patients’ use of semaglutide.
  • Assess the landscape of GLP-1 agonists and their potential benefits and side effects.
