Dentistry has traditionally been divorced from medicine, resulting in most dental clinical models focusing on treating symptoms rather than causes of disease. There is a need to shift our practice philosophy to focus on the important links between oral and systemic health. One solution is to promote health using Integrated Dental Medicine (IDM). Participants will learn strategies to implement a new clinical education model that inspires students to serve as patient advocates. Challenges faced before, during and after a seismic shift in clinical curricula will be highlighted as we demonstrate how to bridge student-centered education with patient-centered delivery of care.

  • Identify challenges in the current practice models of oral health care.
  • Strategize feasible solutions to move towards a patient-centered approach to care.
  • Assess stakeholders’ perspectives, address concerns and progress toward implementation.
