As medical complexities of patient populations increase, it is crucial to equip learners to treat patients holistically in dental settings. This session explores the eight-year evolution of an interprofessional case-based experience engaging dental hygiene, dental and pharmacy learners in a collaborative session, addressing the concepts of antibiotic prophylaxis, anticoagulation, chronic disease management and pain management. Strategies used for design, evaluation, building learner engagement (both virtual and in-person) and the challenges of logistical planning across interprofessional teams will be discussed. Attendees will reflect on courses within their home institutions and brainstorm ways to adapt the model to meet their needs.

  • Describe the creation and evolution of an interprofessional case experience between dental, dental hygiene and pharmacy students including benefits and challenges.
  • Identify methods of how to create similar interprofessional collaborations between disciplines based on resources at own institution.
  • Explain evaluation strategies that can be applied to measure educational impact.
