The Commission on Dental Accreditation Standard 2-25 for predoctoral education states, “Graduates must be competent in assessing and managing the treatment of patients with special needs.” This standard has been challenging for dental education nationally, and the limited exposure students receive has not reinforced new graduates to treat these populations robustly in practice. The example of an elective experience will be a starting point to discuss how interprofessional educational opportunities create a bimodal resource for both special care patients and immersed students to improve preparedness and community impact. In so doing, student competency is reinforced and fostered for future practice.
Learning Objectives:
Strategize with colleagues on how to create educational experiences to strengthen competency and increase capacity for care of medically vulnerable populations.
Identify ways the educational intervention can be adapted to grow future advanced programming for care of patients with special health care needs.
Identify which institutional resources, if any, may be present beyond those provided within the academic dental facility.
