Quality improvement (QI) is a systematic approach to improving the quality of patient care/safety and the processes that support those goals. In dental education, QI can be linked to self-assessment, evidence-guided decision making and patient safety so that integration into existing curriculum is possible. An overview of QI methods, such as Plan-Do-Study-Act, will be presented. Participants will see QI examples for patient communication/education or for increasing evidenced practices based on simulated patient data. Participants will reflect on their own curriculum opportunities to incorporate QI. QI experience during training could empower students to include QI in their future patient care.

  • Describe and sequence the steps in a Quality Improvement(QI) project.
  • Identify available data and evidence-based practices to identify and frame potential Quality Improvement projects
  • Create potential QI scenarios to teach and assess students’ novice QI skills
