Recruiting and retaining the next generation of oral health educators is essential to the future of our profession. The focus of this session is to first broadly explore student to faculty pathway programs in health professions education and then uncover cognitive, behavioral and environmental factors that help to define successful completion of student to faculty pathway programs through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory. The presentation will close with an overview of specific approaches Boston University, University of Pittsburgh and the University of Chicago, Illinois dental schools utilize to facilitate student to faculty pathway programs.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe best practices in development of student to faculty pathway programs in health professions education.
  • List social, cognitive and environmental factors that contribute to the successful completion of student-faculty pathway programs through the application of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory of behavior change.
  • Outline three approaches dental schools can use to establish student-faculty pathway programs including the adaptation of the ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program.
