The 2023 Institute of Medicine report "Unequal Treatment" described the significance of implicit biases when explaining inequities in health care treatments and outcomes. Currently, six states in the US require Implicit Bias CE credits when applying for a new license or renewing a license. The focus of this workshop is to discuss (a) how to optimally educate dental school and dental allied program graduates and (b) dentists/dental hygienists about what implicit biases are, in which situations they are most likely to be used, how their content can be changed and how to respond when they are displayed as micro aggressions.
Learning Objectives:
Explain what Implicit Biases are, when they are most likely to be used and how and why they can change over time.
Examine how the content of Implicit Biases can be changed with stereotype replacement, counter-stereotypic imaging, Individuating, perspective taking and increased intergroup contact.
Analyze a situation in which Implicit Biases are expressed in micro aggressions and discuss the directly address, distract, delay and delegate response techniques.
